Frida Kahlo
Lesson: Art and design
Class: Y1/2B Red Kestrel Year: 2023 - 2024
Year 5 studied the work of Frida Kahlo during a day of art with Mrs McClave. First, we researched her life and then we looked at a number of her self-portraits. We discussed the different emotions that are depicted in her pieces of work and created shapes and patterns to reflect those different emotions. We choose colours carefully to represent the mood, e.g. red for anger
Next, we selected one of her self-portraits to answer questions about and, after cutting it in half and sticking into our books, we sketched the other half and then carefully painted it using watercolours. We learnt the importance of using colour and how facial expressions and body language can change the mood of a painting.
