Mathematics

At Rock Ferry Primary School, mathematics is an essential part of children’s learning and development. We aim to develop confident, capable mathematicians who can reason, solve problems and apply their knowledge in a range of situations. Our teaching focuses on building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, rather than simply memorising procedures, so that children can explain their thinking and apply their skills with confidence.

Early Years: Developing Early Mathematical Understanding

In the Early Years, children begin to develop their understanding of number and mathematical concepts through a mastery approach. Each week, children focus on a “Number of the Week”, exploring that number in depth and in a range of meaningful contexts. This approach, based on the Maths Hub mastery principles, helps children develop a secure understanding of number, including counting, quantity, composition and comparison.

Our continuous provision is carefully designed to encourage children to explore mathematics through play. Activities throughout the environment support children in developing mathematical thinking, such as sorting, counting, measuring, building and pattern making. Through these experiences, children begin to see how maths connects to the world around them.

Daily Mathematics Lessons

From Foundation 2 through to Year 6, children take part in a daily mathematics lesson following the White Rose Maths scheme. This programme supports a mastery approach to mathematics, where children build understanding step by step and revisit key ideas to strengthen their learning.

A key part of our teaching is the use of hands-on manipulatives and practical resources. These allow children to explore mathematical ideas in a concrete way, helping them develop conceptual understanding before moving on to more abstract representations. By seeing and experiencing the mathematics, children gain a deeper understanding rather than simply learning procedures by rote.

Securing Core Mathematical Skills

Alongside the daily maths lesson, children in Years 1–6 take part in an additional daily session focused on basic mathematical skills. These sessions help to strengthen key knowledge and build fluency.

In Key Stage 1, this session focuses on:

  • Developing mathematical vocabulary using Maths Dictionary

  • Building strong number sense and practising key number facts using NumBots

From Year 2 to Year 6, the focus shifts to strengthening core skills through:

  • Arithmetic practice tailored to gaps in children’s knowledge using My Mini Maths

  • Developing fluency with multiplication facts using TT Rockstars

These regular sessions help children build the speed, accuracy and confidence needed to apply their skills effectively in their wider mathematics learning.

Our Aim

Our goal is for every child to develop a secure understanding of mathematics and a positive attitude towards the subject. Through practical learning, clear explanations and regular opportunities to practise and apply their knowledge, we support children to become confident mathematicians who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
